The reason for the various sizes is that each country has their own standard looms. For example, 8′ x 10′ is a standard size in India, whereas in Iran they typically make 8′ x 11′ rugs. You can learn more about different size looms by reading our post The Loom.
Odd Sizes
Sometimes, you’ll find area rugs outside of the standard sizes. These are typically referred to as ‘odd size’ rugs and are not as commonly found. Still, if you happen to come across one, odd size area rugs can make some of the most beautiful additions if put in the right space.
Measure First
Now that you know more about the different sizes for area rugs, you’re almost on your way. But before you start looking for your new area rug, make sure to have measured the space it’s intended to go in first. Always try to figure out which size area rug you need before you start shopping. Our main recommendation for measuring is to consider the area rug as a centre piece, so that you can still see some of the floor surrounding it.
With these tips in mind, you should be a bit better equipped to shop for your next area rug.
