RUG CARE & MAINTENANCE

With a little routine care, a handmade rug can last for many years. Regular vacuuming, timely attention to spills, and occasional professional washing will help keep your rug looking its best over time.

VACUUMING

Regular vacuuming is the most important step in caring for your handmade rug. It removes dust and everyday debris before they settle deep into the pile.

  • Aim to vacuum once a week, or as needed in higher-traffic areas.
  • Use suction only or a soft floor attachment. Avoid rotating brush rolls.
  • Vacuum in the direction of the pile, from the light end of the rug toward the darker end.
  • Avoid running the vacuum directly over the fringe.

SPILLS & STAINS

Spills happen. The sooner they are addressed, the easier they are to remove.

  • For most fresh spills, gently blot with clean water and continue blotting until as much moisture as possible has been absorbed.
  • Blot with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
  • Do not rub the affected area, as this can spread the stain and damage the pile.
  • Avoid harsh household cleaners or chemicals unless recommended by a professional.

For deep or persistent stains, professional cleaning and stain treatment are recommended. The steps above are intended to help minimize damage until the rug can be properly treated.

PET ACCIDENTS

Pet accidents require prompt attention and can require professional treatment, particularly when urine has penetrated into the pile or foundation.

  • Blot as much moisture as possible with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
  • Do not scrub or soak the rug.
  • Avoid household cleaners or chemicals unless recommended by a professional.
  • Have pet accidents professionally treated as soon as possible.

Pet urine can damage fibres, dyes and the foundation of a handmade rug if left untreated. Even when a stain appears to disappear, residue and odour can remain deeper within the rug.

LOOSE FIBRES & SHEDDING

Occasionally, you may notice a loose yarn or small fibre pull. This is normal with handmade rugs.

  • Never pull on a loose yarn.
  • Instead, carefully trim it flush with the surrounding pile using a pair of sharp scissors.
  • Occasional loose fibres are a normal part of a handmade rug and do not affect its structure or longevity when properly trimmed.

Some shedding is also normal with certain rugs, particularly when they are new. Regular vacuuming will help remove loose fibres, and shedding should decrease over time.

ROTATE YOUR RUG

Rotating your rug every 6–12 months helps distribute foot traffic and sunlight more evenly. This simple step promotes even wear and can help minimize uneven fading in areas exposed to direct sunlight.

RUG PADS

A rug pad is recommended for most rugs, especially in high-traffic areas or when placed on hard surfaces.

  • Helps reduce slipping and movement.
  • Provides additional comfort underfoot.
  • Helps keep the rug in place and can reduce movement-related wear.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

Regular vacuuming helps maintain your rug, but over time dust and debris can settle deeper into the pile. Professional cleaning removes this buildup, refreshes the fibres, and helps restore the natural beauty of your rug.

For quality wool rugs, a proper wash can enhance the appearance of the colours and bring back the softness and character of the fibres. We generally recommend professional cleaning every 3–5 years, depending on usage and traffic.

STORAGE

If storing your rug for an extended period, a few simple precautions can help protect it from moisture, creasing and pests.

  • Have the rug professionally cleaned before long-term storage.
  • Roll the rug rather than folding it to help avoid permanent crease marks.
  • Store it in a clean, dry area away from moisture.
  • Occasionally unroll and inspect the rug, as moths are attracted to natural fibres such as wool and prefer dark, undisturbed areas.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL

Wool has long been considered the preferred fibre for quality handmade rugs. It is naturally durable, resilient, and designed to handle everyday use while maintaining its beauty and character over time.

Wool is also easy to care for and responds well to regular maintenance and professional cleaning. With proper care, a quality wool rug can last for many years.
